These tools give estimates and general information. They are not tax, accounting or legal advice, and they don’t account for the specifics of your business. Always confirm what applies to your situation before acting on a result.
Not every supply is standard-rated. Exempt and zero-rated supplies are treated differently, and this calculator doesn't determine which category yours falls into.
The mistake worth avoiding
Businesses lose money on VAT in two ordinary ways.
Pricing off the wrong figure. If your displayed prices include VAT and you set them by adding a margin to cost as though they did not, you are giving away roughly the tax on every sale.
Losing input tax. Every VAT-registered supplier invoice you cannot produce, or that never went through eTIMS, is input tax you cannot claim and an expense you may not be able to deduct. Filing on time is the easy half of VAT; keeping the paperwork that supports the figures is the half that actually costs businesses money.

Is my menu or shelf price VAT-inclusive or exclusive?
If you are VAT-registered and the customer pays the price on the menu or the shelf, that price is VAT-inclusive — the tax is already inside it. Choose Includes VAT above to see what is actually yours. Pricing as though the displayed figure were net is one of the quieter ways a business loses margin.
When do I have to register for VAT?
Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes the threshold in any twelve-month period, and you can register voluntarily below it. Whether voluntary registration helps depends on whether your customers can reclaim it and how much input tax you carry — it is worth a conversation before you decide.
What is eTIMS and does it affect me?
eTIMS is KRA's electronic invoicing system. Invoices have to be generated through it, and — this is the part that catches businesses out — expenses are only deductible if the supplier's invoice went through it too. So your suppliers' compliance becomes your problem at year end. We check supplier invoices as part of monthly bookkeeping for exactly this reason.
Does a nil return still have to be filed?
Yes. A period with no VAT to pay is still a period with a return due, and filing nothing is not the same as filing nil — the penalty is the same either way. For the date your return is due, check with KRA or with us: this site does not publish filing dates until each one has been verified.
